The Alchemist - Book Review

The Alchemist is about the journey of a young man named Santiago. He leaves his life as a shepherd and goes on a search for treasure in the Egyptian pyramids. Along the way, he encounters characters who bring him closer to understanding his personal legend. In the end he finds his treasure and more. This book is an inspiring and light-hearted read that will spark the desire to follow your dreams. Reading this book made me feel like Pocahontas in Colors of the wind, just downright easy, breezy, and magical.

“People are afraid to pursue their most important dreams, because they feel that they don’t deserve them, or that they’ll be unable to achieve them.”

∼Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist page 134

This struck me deeply as I read. I began to realize that many of my dreams have been buried in fear, thinking that either I’m not good enough or that I will fail. Unfortunately, my fears do not settle the longing of my being to go after what it is I truly desire. My heart is afraid to be crushed again. It's so much easier to play it safe.

“Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a second’s encounter with God and with eternity.”

∼Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist, (Character: the Alchemist) Page 134

This is just the dose of reality I needed this season. It caused me to reflect deeply on how much my heart convinces my mind that the suffering itself is more detrimental than the fear I am often paralyzed by. I began to reflect on my desire to write and produce content. How I yearn to be heard and to give the hearts and the minds of people the awe-inspiring feelings of exhilaration that I get when I read the books of my favorite authors.

Am I willing to endure the suffering of the journey and find the dreams tucked in my heart by God himself? I think so…

Are you willing to do the same?

Honestly this book is a classic an you may have read it before. If it's been a while or you haven't read the book before it's worth the read. As the seasons change and we head into the last stretch of the year this book may be one to help give you the spark of wonder and adventure you're looking for. It's an quick read. So grab a cup of tea and a cozy corner and enjoy The Alchemist.
